North Korea has unveiled its first nuclear-powered submarine, calling it a “nuclear-powered strategic guided missile submarine.” State media released images of leader Kim Jong Un visiting shipyards where warships are being built.
Experts believe the submarine could carry around 10 missiles, including nuclear-capable ones. This development strengthens North Korea’s ability to launch attacks from underwater, making detection much harder.
There are concerns over how North Korea, under heavy sanctions, managed to develop this advanced submarine. Some experts suggest that Russia may have helped by providing technology in exchange for weapons or troops for its war in Ukraine.
North Korea has around 70 to 90 submarines, but most are outdated. If this new submarine becomes operational, it could significantly increase the country’s naval strength.
In the past, North Korea has claimed to build advanced submarines, but experts remained skeptical. There is still no confirmation that previous nuclear-capable submarines have been deployed.
Kim Jong Un has stressed the need to modernize North Korea’s naval forces, calling for the construction of “overwhelming warships” to counter its adversaries.
This development poses a serious security threat to South Korea and the United States, as it gives North Korea a stronger second-strike nuclear capability.
