A fashion show in the winter resort of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, has triggered strong criticism from political and religious leaders. The event, held in the month of Ramadan, was condemned for being “obscene” and against the cultural and religious values of the region.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Hurriyat chairman and Kashmir’s chief cleric, called it “outrageous” and demanded accountability. Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat and the All J&K Shia Association also condemned the show, questioning how such an event was allowed during Ramadan.
J&K People’s Conference chairperson Sajad Lone said the event was “avoidable” and disrespectful to local sentiments.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged the public anger and said his office has sought a report from local authorities within 24 hours. He assured that further action would be taken based on the findings.
