Guwahati: Kuki protesters in Manipur have declared an “indefinite shutdown” in all Kuki-dominated districts, blocking the government’s move to restart bus services and ensure free movement in the violence-hit state.
The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities has kept transport services suspended since May 2023. The state had planned to resume bus movement on key routes from March 8 with security escorts, following orders from Home Minister Amit Shah.
However, Kuki protesters blocked National Highway-2 in Kangpokpi on Saturday, felling trees and throwing stones at the road. Security forces clashed with them, resulting in one protester’s death and 43 injuries, including security personnel. This was the first death since President’s Rule was imposed on February 13.
The Kuki organisations demand that the Centre first resolve their call for a “separate administration” before allowing Meiteis to pass through their areas. The shutdown has disrupted normal life in Kuki-dominated districts, with protesters burning tyres and throwing stones.
Despite security forces clearing roads, bus services remain suspended to prevent further violence. This marks the third failed attempt to restart transport between the Kuki and Meitei regions.
