Israel’s Energy Minister Eli Cohen has ordered the immediate halt of electricity supply to Gaza. This step is meant to put pressure on Hamas to release the hostages it has been holding since October 7, 2023.
Cohen stated that Israel would use all possible measures to ensure the safe return of its hostages and to prevent Hamas from continuing its control over Gaza. Israel had already stopped electricity to Gaza after the attacks but later allowed power for a desalination plant. Now, that supply has also been cut.
The plant provided water to over 600,000 people in Gaza. Israel has accused Hamas of misusing humanitarian aid and supplies to strengthen its position rather than helping civilians.
This decision comes after Hamas rejected a proposal for an extended ceasefire and hostage release deal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also warned of stronger actions if Hamas does not agree to release the hostages.
Israel has said that there is already enough aid inside Gaza, but Hamas controls the distribution. Talks are ongoing in Doha, and Israel is prepared to take further steps if negotiations do not succeed.
