In the latest, a senior Bangladeshi military official with close relation to Pakistan has been put under surveillance for allegedly making moves to stage a coup in the Army, according to India Today.
The order was passed by Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman following he got a whiff of moves by Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, a Quarter Master General (QMG), to replace him.
The move comes following the Chief’s secretariat was flagged about the meetings being called by Lt Gen Faizur Rahman, a known Jamaat sympathiser, without his knowledge.
According to the media sources, these meetings with divisional commanders were being called to gather support against the acting Chief of the Bangladesh Army. However, he failed to receive adequate support.
In the first meeting of Mrach, Lt General Faizur Rahman called a meeting of key divisional commanders (GOCs). However, the Army Chief’s secretariat found out about the meeting and a warning was sent to the top officials. The top officials backed out from the crucial meeting.
In the first two months of 2025, Lt General Faizur Rahman held meetings with Jamaat leaders and Pakistani diplomats. The Bangladesh Army Chief was flagged about these meetings, following which he became cautious and put him under surveillance.
The development comes at a time when Bangladesh is again seeing unrest amid a surge in violence, vandalism, and rioting over the last few months.
