At Columbia University, an Indian student named Ranjani Srinivasan has left the United States following her student visa was revoked for allegedly supporting Hamas. US government designates Hamas as a terrorist organisation.
On Friday the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Srinivasan, who was pursuing a PhD in Urban Planning, used the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App to self-deport on March 11.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, “It is a privilege to be granted a visa to live & study in the United States of America. When you advocate for violence and terrorism that privilege should be revoked and you should not be in this country. I’m glad to see one of the Columbia University terrorist sympathizers use the CBP Home app to self deport”.
On March 5 Srinivasan was revoked. In a statement, DHS said she was involved in activities which supported Hamas and accused her of advocating for violence and terrorism.
In a similar case, Leqaa Kordia, a Palestinian student from the West Bank, was arrested by ICE HSI Newark officers for overstaying her F-1 visa, which had been terminated in January 2022 for lack of attendance. Previously Kordia was arrested in April 2024 for participating in pro-Hamas protests at Columbia University.
