Shashi Tharoor, Congress leader and MP from Kerala has acknowledged publicly that he was mistaken in opposing India’s neutral stance during the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022.
While speaking at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, Tharoor reflected on his earlier criticism of India’s position, admitting he felt he had “egg on his face.”
He noted that India’s balanced approach allowed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to diplomatically engage with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin within a short span, enhancing India’s global diplomatic standing.
Initially, the Congress leader had advocated for a more critical stance against Russia’s actions, citing violations of international law and principles. However, he now concedes that India’s neutrality positioned the country uniquely, enabling it to maintain relations with both nations and potentially play a role in peace efforts.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized upon Tharoor’s admission to taunt the Congress party, suggesting that his remarks might embarrass Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. BJP leaders highlighted that Tharoor’s praise for Prime Minister Modi’s diplomatic approach could lead to internal party repercussions.
