Kannur’s district sessions court on Monday sentenced eight CPI(M) workers to life imprisonment for the 2005 murder of BJP worker Elambilayi Sooraj. Another accused received a three-year rigorous imprisonment term.
The court had found nine individuals guilty last Friday in connection with Sooraj’s brutal killing on August 7, 2005, in Muzhappilangad village. Among those sentenced to life is T K Rajeesh, already serving a life term for the 2012 murder of Marxist leader T P Chandrasekharan.
Also convicted is P M Manoraj, the brother of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s press secretary. The verdict marks another instance of political violence in the region, long known for its party clashes.
