Private airline Tata Air India has changed its travel policy. From April 1, top officials, including the CEO Campbell Wilson, will travel in economy class instead of business class for domestic work trips. This rule will apply to all employees from June 1.
An Air India spokesperson said that the decision was made to keep business and premium economy seats available for customers. The airline is seeing a huge demand for premium seats, so it wants to ensure that passengers get them first.
An airline official said that since Tata took over in 2022, the demand for premium seats has more than doubled. Air India currently offers 50,000 premium economy seats per week, and this will increase to 65,000 weekly seats by October after retrofitting aircraft.
Employees will still have a chance to upgrade to business or premium economy if a seat is vacant 50 minutes before departure.
