On Wednesday, the Supreme Court dismissed a PIL seeking an investigation into allegations of a honeytrap scandal in Karnataka, calling it ‘political nonsense’ and refusing to entertain the plea.
The top court questioned the significance of the PIL, given that the petitioner was from Jharkhand. The Supreme Court said, “You are a resident of Jharkhand. Why are you bothering about what’s happening in that state? They are competent enough to take care of this”.
The counsel for the petitioner argued that the allegations surrounding the honeytrap case were critical and warranted a judicial inquiry.
The counsel contended, “We are concerned about the independence of the judiciary”. However, the Supreme Court was not convinced. “Why should they fall into the honeytrap? If someone sets up a honeytrap and you fall into it, you are inviting trouble for yourself,” the bench observed, adding that the court had more pressing matters to handle than political disputes.
The controversy first occurred in the Karnataka Assembly when Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna alleged that an attempt was made to honeytrap him and at least 48 political leaders across parties had fallen victim to similar schemes.
While speaking to the reporters, Rajanna called for strict action against those involved in orchestrating such incidents. Narrating his experience, Rajanna revealed that during both the alleged honeytrap attempts, the same man accompanied different women each time.
