Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services faced a major disruption across India on Wednesday evening, leaving users unable to complete digital transactions. Many people reported failed payments on popular UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. While some banks, including ICICI Bank, remained operational, others like HDFC Bank experienced issues.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI, acknowledged the problem and assured users that it had been resolved. In a post on social media platform X, NPCI stated, “The same has been addressed now and the system has stabilised. Regret the inconvenience.”
UPI is one of India’s most widely used digital payment systems, allowing users to send and receive money instantly. It is free of charge and widely accepted at local shops. Despite strong security measures, users should remain cautious against fraud.
Many users reported issues on Downdetector, a website that tracks online service outages. The exact cause of the disruption remains unclear.
