Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, said on Thursday that the old way of Canada working with the United States, based on shared business and military ties, is over. He mentioned that he is planning to talk to U.S. President Donald Trump soon about the ongoing trade dispute.
Carney explained that he has not spoken to Trump since becoming Prime Minister on March 14, but he expects to have a conversation in the next couple of days. However, he didn’t suggest that relations between the two countries would get better soon.
Carney believes that the U.S. is no longer a dependable partner for Canada. He said that while there may be a chance to rebuild some trust through talks, things will never go back to the way they were. The relationship between Canada and the U.S. will be different in the future.
In response to Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods like steel and aluminum, Canada has placed tariffs on U.S. products worth $41.9 billion. Carney’s government also plans to put tariffs on another $66 billion worth of American goods because of Trump’s new 25% tariff on cars with parts from outside the U.S.
