A huge earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck central Myanmar on Friday at 12:50 pm local time. The earthquake’s epicenter was located 16 km northwest of the city of Sagaing, and it hit at a depth of 10 km. There have been no reports of injuries or deaths so far.
There was no tsunami warning issued. The tremors from the earthquake were felt in places as far away as northern Thailand, where some metro and train services in Bangkok were temporarily stopped. The tremors were also felt in China’s Yunnan province. In Thailand, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called for an emergency meeting to review the situation.
Videos shared online showed buildings shaking in Bangkok and other cities, with people running into the streets in fear. One person from Chiang Mai described how they ran out of their house in their pajamas after feeling the quake.
One shocking video showed water from an infinity pool spilling over the edge. Another video showed violent splashes in a small pool at a private home, looking like mini-tsunamis. A third video showed an under-construction skyscraper collapsing. It has been reported that at least 40 workers are missing from the building.
