Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern after two powerful earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.7 and 6.4, hit Myanmar earlier today. He reached out to Myanmar and Thailand, offering help and praying for everyone’s safety.
“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
The earthquakes, which happened at 12:50 pm local time, were felt in many places, including India, China, Thailand, and Bangladesh, with strong aftershocks. The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing in Myanmar, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The tremors were so strong that they were felt 900 kilometers away in Bangkok, Thailand. In response, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha declared a state of emergency after meeting to assess the damage.
