- SC Rejects FIR Plea: Petition for FIR against Justice Varma dismissed.
- In-House Inquiry: Ongoing investigation by Chief Justice of India.
- No Interference: SC waits for inquiry report before taking further action.
The Supreme Court has rejected a petition that asked for a First Information Report (FIR) to be filed against Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma. The petition was related to a scandal where a large amount of unaccounted cash was allegedly found at his home on March 14.
The court, made up of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, said it wouldn’t take up the petition because an internal investigation was already being conducted by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna. The court added that if the investigation finds any wrongdoing, legal action could follow.
The petitioners, lawyers Mathews J Nedumpara and Hemali Suresh Kurne, argued that an FIR should have been filed immediately and raised questions about why no action was taken earlier. They pointed out a similar case in Kerala involving allegations against a retired judge.
Justice Oka responded, saying the public should be aware of the Supreme Court’s rules and decisions. The court emphasized that since the internal inquiry was still ongoing, it wouldn’t interfere for now.
The Supreme Court dismissed the petition and said it would consider further action after the inquiry report is submitted.
