A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, leaving around 700 people dead and over 1,600 injured. The epicenter was in Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, causing buildings to collapse and roads to crack.
The tremors were so strong that they were felt in Bangkok, which is 900 km away, as well as in parts of India, Bangladesh, and China. In Thailand, a 30-storey skyscraper collapsed, with at least eight deaths reported. Authorities fear the toll could rise above 10,000 as rescue efforts continue.
Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing has declared an emergency in six regions and urged international help. He confirmed that 144 bodies have been recovered so far, but the actual toll could be much higher.
India has stepped forward as the first responder under ‘Operation Brahma’. A 15-tonne relief package was sent via an Indian Air Force cargo plane to Yangon. This includes tents, blankets, food, medicines, hygiene kits, and water purifiers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern and assured full support. “India stands ready to offer all possible assistance,” he posted on X (Twitter). More aid is expected in the coming days.
Several countries, including the United States, have also offered assistance. Myanmar’s government has opened its borders for foreign aid as relief efforts intensify.
