Kathmandu witnessed violent clashes on Friday as pro-monarchy protesters set a house on fire and tried to break security barricades. Nepal Police used tear gas, water cannons, and even fired blank rounds to control the situation, local media reported.
According to The Kathmandu Post and PTI, the protests escalated at Tinkune, where several security personnel and demonstrators were injured. Many of the injured were taken to Kantipur Hospital for treatment.
Protesters chanted slogans such as “Raja aau desh bachau” (May King come to save the country) and demanded the return of Nepal’s monarchy, which was abolished in 2008. Some demonstrators carried images of former King Gyanendra Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Security forces detained several protesters who tried to march toward New Baneshwor, a restricted zone. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party and other royalist groups supported the rally.
Meanwhile, anti-monarchy protesters, led by the Socialist Front, held a separate rally in Bhrikutimandap. Leaders from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) also addressed the gathering, condemning calls for monarchy’s return.
