US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and India, despite his repeated criticism of India’s high tariffs on American goods. Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very smart man” and a “great friend,” highlighting progress in discussions over trade disputes.
“Prime Minister Modi was here just recently, and we have always been very good friends,” Trump stated, underscoring the importance of the US-India relationship. Acknowledging India’s steep tariffs, he remarked, “India is one of the highest tariffing nations in the world… it’s brutal. But they’re very smart. Modi is a very smart man and a great friend of mine. We had very good talks. I think it’s going to work out very well between India and our country.”
His comments follow months of negotiations between Washington and New Delhi, aimed at resolving key trade issues, including market access, reciprocal tariffs, and the trade deficit. Modi’s visit to Washington in February was a pivotal moment in these discussions, with both nations working to bridge differences in crucial sectors such as automobiles, agriculture, and alcohol.
