Maharashtra police have registered three additional FIRs against comedian Kunal Kamra for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Kamra had stirred controversy by referring to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor).
The fresh complaints, lodged in different parts of Maharashtra, have now been transferred to Khar police station for further investigation, a police source told The Indian Express.
Khar police are already probing a criminal defamation case against Kamra over the same remarks. He has been issued two summonses to join the investigation, but his request for a week’s extension was denied by the police.
The latest FIRs were filed by Shiv Sena members Mayur Borse (Manmad, Nashik), Sanjay Bhujbal (Jalgaon Jamod, Buldhana), and Sunil Jadhav (Nandgaon Manmad, Nashik). The complainants allege that Kamra’s comments defamed Shinde’s moral standing as Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister and incited animosity between political parties.
According to a police officer, the new cases have been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 353(1)(b) and 353(2) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation).
