Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has criticized the Trump administration for its harsh words regarding Greenland. He said Denmark is already increasing security in the Arctic and remains open to cooperation with the U.S.
The statement came after U.S. Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland. Vance accused Denmark of not investing enough in Greenland’s security and suggested the U.S. should take control of the island. This angered Danish and Greenlandic leaders.
President Donald Trump later said he does not rule out military action to acquire Greenland but hopes it can be done peacefully. He claimed taking Greenland would benefit world security.
Greenland’s politicians rejected Trump’s attempts to take over the island. Four of the five parties in its parliament formed a coalition to resist U.S. pressure.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen defended her country, saying it is a strong ally and has increased Arctic defense spending. Protests also erupted in Copenhagen against U.S. interference.
Denmark has already committed $2.1 billion for Arctic security, including new naval ships and drones. Løkke Rasmussen reminded the U.S. that their 1951 defense agreement allows discussions on military presence.
