- The incident has sparked a political row, with opposition questioning the government’s accountability.
A 21-year-old NEET aspirant, Devadarshini, died by suicide at her home in Chennai on Friday. She had failed the exam three times and was preparing for her fourth attempt, scheduled for May.
According to the police, she was worried about her repeated failures and the financial strain on her family. On Thursday, she spoke to her father about her concerns. He consoled her and asked her to focus on her studies.
On Friday morning, after helping her parents at their bakery, she returned home. When she did not answer calls, her parents rushed home and found her hanging. They reported the incident to the police. Her body was sent for an autopsy and later handed over to the family.
Her death has sparked a political debate. AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami blamed the ruling DMK government, saying NEET-related deaths are due to their false promises. He accused the DMK of introducing NEET along with Congress before 2014 and later deceiving students by claiming they would remove it.
Palaniswami said the DMK has blood on its hands and questioned whether the deaths of aspirants do not affect the conscience of its leaders.
