- Trump questions whether to fire NSA Mike Waltz after Yemen war plan leak.
- Waltz mistakenly added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to a private Signal chat.
- Trump consults top officials but leans toward keeping Waltz in his position.
U.S. President Donald Trump has decided not to remove National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, despite a controversy over leaked military plans on a Signal group chat. Trump stated he does not fire people over “fake news and witch hunts.”
The issue began when Waltz accidentally added The Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to a Signal group where top officials discussed plans for airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen. The leak caused a political storm, with some advisers urging Trump to dismiss Waltz.
Trump publicly supported Waltz, calling him a “good man” and criticized the media for sensationalizing the incident. However, privately, he consulted key officials, including Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, before making his decision.
While Trump was unhappy with the leak, his main concern appeared to be Waltz’s link to Goldberg. Some officials doubted whether Waltz fully aligned with Trump’s foreign policy, particularly on Iran.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was also in the group, remains secure in his position. The controversy highlighted internal tensions within Trump’s administration, but for now, Waltz retains his role.
