- The Karen National Union condemned Myanmar’s military for airstrikes on villages amid the earthquake disaster.
- Military airstrikes hit Karen state shortly after the earthquake, affecting both military and resistance-held areas.
- The National Unity Government announced a two-week pause in military actions to focus on disaster relief.
An armed group in Myanmar, the Karen National Union, criticized the military for carrying out airstrikes on villages, even though the country is suffering from a recent earthquake that has killed around 1,700 people. The group said that the military should be helping with disaster relief but is instead attacking civilians.
The military launched airstrikes and drone attacks in Karen state, near the headquarters of the Karen National Union, right after the earthquake hit on Friday. The earthquake’s epicenter was in an area controlled by the military, but the damage spread to areas held by resistance groups as well.
In response, the National Unity Government, a group of people who were part of the ousted government, announced that anti-junta militias would stop all military actions for two weeks to focus on relief efforts.
