On Sunday, former US President Donald Trump warned Iran of bombings and extra tariffs if they don’t agree to a deal with the US over its nuclear program.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said US and Iranian officials were talking, but didn’t give details. He added, “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing,” and mentioned he might also impose secondary tariffs like he did four years ago.
Trump had pulled the US out of a 2015 agreement that placed limits on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for lifting some sanctions. He also reimposed strict sanctions. Since then, Iran has gone beyond the agreed limits in its nuclear program.
Iran has rejected Trump’s warning, and responded through Oman saying it was open to talks about a new nuclear deal. Western countries worry Iran is secretly trying to build nuclear weapons, while Iran insists its nuclear program is for civilian energy use only.
