- Taiwan criticized Bangladesh’s joint statement with China opposing Taiwanese independence.
- Taiwan reaffirmed its sovereignty, insisting it is an independent country.
- Taiwan urged Bangladesh to strengthen economic ties to promote peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
Taiwan has strongly criticized Bangladesh after a joint statement with China. The statement, made on March 28, came after a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, in Beijing. In the statement, both countries said they oppose “Taiwanese independence” and support the “One China” policy, which means they consider Taiwan a part of China.
In response, Taiwan said that it is a sovereign and independent country, not under China’s control. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that no matter what others say, Taiwan’s status as a separate country remains unchanged. Taiwan insists that it is not controlled by China and any statement that says otherwise doesn’t change the internationally recognized situation between Taiwan and China.
The Taiwanese government said it will strongly protect its national independence and work with friendly countries to support democracy, freedom, and regional peace, stability, and development.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry also urged Bangladesh to increase economic and trade cooperation with Taiwan in a practical and open way. They said this could help promote democracy, peace, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
On March 28, Yunus and Xi Jinping met in Beijing during Yunus’s three-day visit to China. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and insists that other countries stop having official relations with Taiwan. China follows the “One China” policy, meaning there is only one China, with Beijing as the capital. China has said it will reunite Taiwan with the mainland, even by force if necessary.
