The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was introduced in Parliament today, with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress instructing their MPs to be present for the session.
As neither the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nor the Opposition’s INDI alliance has reached an agreement, the bill’s fate is expected to be determined by a majority vote in the House.
The bill was tabled after the Question Hour for consideration and passage, followed by an eight-hour debate, which could be extended if necessary.
Alongside the BJP and Congress, their allied parties have also directed their MPs to attend the parliamentary session on April 2 and 3.
The opposition has strongly opposed the bill. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief whip Dharmendra Yadav has urged all SP MPs in the Lok Sabha to be present on April 2 and participate in the discussions. Meanwhile, INDIA bloc leaders convened in Parliament on Tuesday to strategize their approach to the bill.
