Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has been facing criticism after he missed the important debate on the Waqf Bill, which he has previously spoken against. He arrived just before the voting, wearing casual clothes like cargos and chappals, which upset many people on the internet.
The Waqf Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after a long, 13-hour debate, with 288 members voting in favor and 232 against. The Bill will now be presented in the Rajya Sabha. Before the Bill was discussed, Rahul Gandhi attended a meeting with senior Congress leaders to decide the party’s stance on the Bill.
However, he chose to leave right after the meeting and was not present for the debate. He only showed up for the voting in casual attire, which upset many people online. One user on X (formerly Twitter) even questioned whether he was fit to be a Member of Parliament.
Calling out the Congress leader for his casual dressing style and giving the Waqf debate a miss, another user by the username of @shreejit_mumbai said, “Rahul Gandhi’s lazy, entitled demeanor and constant gaffes prove he’s a political liability. India needs leaders with grit, not a dynast stumbling through speeches.”
Rahul Gandhi did not speak about the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha when everyone expected him to. However, later that night, he shared a post on social media. In his post, he called the bill a “weapon aimed at marginalising Muslims” and said it would take away their personal laws and property rights.
