Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Thailand on April 3 for a two-day trip to attend the 6th BIMSTEC summit. Upon his arrival in Bangkok, he was warmly welcomed by Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The two leaders also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the visit.
A special moment in the visit was when PM Shinawatra presented PM Modi with a gift: The World Tipitaka: Sajjhaya Phonetic Edition. The Tipitaka is a sacred collection of Buddha’s teachings. This special edition, published by Thailand in 2016, was created to preserve the correct pronunciation of Buddha’s teachings in both Pali and Thai scripts.
PM Modi accepted the gift with great respect, saying that he received it on behalf of India, also known as “Buddha Bhoomi.” He shared that last year, holy relics of Lord Buddha were sent from India to Thailand, allowing millions of devotees to see them. He also announced that more holy relics from Gujarat will be sent to Thailand soon.
During his visit, PM Modi and PM Shinawatra discussed strengthening their countries’ relationship. They agreed to turn their partnership into a strategic one, focusing on security, cooperation against cybercrimes, human trafficking, and illegal migration. They also talked about improving ties in tourism, culture, education, and trade. PM Modi highlighted Thailand’s important role in India’s “Act East Policy” and vision for the Indo-Pacific region.
