- K. Annamalai steps down as Tamil Nadu BJP president, citing ongoing BJP-AIADMK alliance talks.
- New state president will be chosen unanimously by party members; announcement expected on April 9.
- BJP MLA Nainar Nagendran, former AIADMK leader, is a leading candidate for the role.
K. Annamalai has confirmed that he is stepping down as the Tamil Nadu president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Reports say his decision is linked to ongoing talks between the BJP and AIADMK about an alliance for the upcoming assembly elections next year.
Annamalai said that the next state president will be chosen by party members in a unanimous decision. He also made it clear that he will not be part of the race for the new state president.
The new BJP state president is expected to be announced on April 9, after a selection process on April 7. BJP leader Kishan Reddy will visit Tamil Nadu on April 7 to discuss the appointment.
Annamalai has already informed Union Home Minister Amit Shah about his decision to step down. One of the possible candidates for the role of state president is BJP MLA Nainar Nagendran, who was previously with AIADMK and is from the influential Thevar community.
Annamalai, who joined the BJP in August 2020, became the state president in just 10 months. He said that the central leadership of the BJP will make the final decision on the alliance structure for the upcoming elections.
