- Justice Yashwant Varma sworn in as a judge of Allahabad High Court.
- Controversy surrounds his appointment after burnt sacks of cash were found at his home last month.
- Varma won’t take judicial duties for now due to ongoing investigation.
Justice Yashwant Varma took the oath as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on Saturday, but his appointment has caused a lot of controversy. Just last month, authorities reportedly found partially burnt sacks filled with cash at his house, which has raised concerns about his appointment.
Although the oath-taking ceremony took place, sources confirm that Justice Varma won’t be assigned any judicial duties for now, hinting that there are ongoing issues behind the scenes.
His transfer from the Delhi High Court came during an active investigation by the Chief Justice of India. The probe began after “semi-burnt sacks” filled with cash were found in his home following a fire. The fire happened on March 14, 2025, at his official residence in New Delhi. A short circuit was thought to be the cause, but the discovery of the sacks of money led to a deeper investigation.
Before the oath ceremony, a lawyer filed a petition asking the court to delay the swearing-in until the investigation was complete. The legal community has strongly criticized the appointment. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association expressed their anger, calling the decision “troubling.” The investigation is ongoing, and there are still many questions about what happened.
