- 11 Indian fishermen to be released, with more likely to follow
Sri Lankan President Ranil Dissanayake assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Sri Lanka will not allow its land or waters to be used in any way that could harm India’s security. This statement was made during important talks in Colombo, where both countries also signed a Defence Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the first time.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri explained that Sri Lanka’s president clearly said that Sri Lankan land and waters will not be used against India’s interests. This agreement is part of a larger effort to improve defense cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.
The discussions also covered issues like Indian fishermen accidentally entering Sri Lankan waters. Misri mentioned that Sri Lanka will release 11 Indian fishermen soon, with more expected to be freed in the coming days. The focus was on finding a helpful and cooperative approach to resolve these issues, as they affect the livelihoods of fishermen on both sides.
Sri Lanka’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Arun Hemachandra, also expressed confidence in the strong relationship between the two countries, saying that India’s support is greatly appreciated and that the relationship will continue to grow.
