Tahawwur Rana Brought to India: Tahawwur Rana, one of the masterminds behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was brought back to India from the United States. He landed at Palam Airport in Delhi and will be questioned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Major Diplomatic Win: Bringing Rana back to India is a big success for the country. This was possible mainly because of the hard work of Sadanand Date, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, who helped convince the US court to allow Rana’s extradition.
Who is Sadanand Date?
Current Role: He is the Director General of the NIA and will lead the questioning of Rana.
Survivor of 26/11 Attacks: Date was injured during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Now, he is leading the case against one of the key people behind those attacks, which gives a powerful sense of justice.
Background:
Born on December 14, 1966.
A 1991-batch IPS officer from Maharashtra.
Has worked in major roles like CBI Deputy Inspector General, Commissioner of Police in Mumbai suburbs, and Chief of Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad.
He has a PhD, is a qualified cost and management accountant, and studied organized crime in the US under the Humphrey Fellowship Program.
Awards: He received the President’s Medal in 2007 for his service.
Rana’s Interrogation
A special room has been set up on the 3rd floor of the NIA Headquarters in Delhi.
Only 12 top officials are allowed in, including Sadanand Date, IG Ashish Batra, and DIG Jaya Roy.
The NIA will question Rana about:
His role in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, where over 170 people died.
His links with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Pakistan’s spy agency ISI.
How he helped terrorists by using his business as a cover.
How he managed to escape the law for so long.
