KEY POINTS

  • DRDO tested a laser weapon that destroys drones with directed energy
  • India joins an exclusive club of countries with this technology
  • The system offers fast, cost-effective defense against drone threats

In a proud moment for the country, India has successfully tested a powerful laser weapon that can destroy enemy drones in just a few seconds. This weapon was created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and it uses directed energy to hit its target with extreme accuracy and speed.

The test took place in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, where DRDO’s Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS) conducted a live demonstration of the new weapon system called Laser Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) Mk-II(A). Mounted on a vehicle, this advanced system tracked drones, locked onto them, and destroyed them using a high-powered laser beam. It successfully targeted fixed-wing UAVs and even swarm drones, causing major damage to their structure and sensors.

With this success, India has become one of the few countries in the world to develop and test such advanced laser weapons. So far, only countries like the United States, Russia, China, and Israel have shown this capability. According to DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat, India is now the fourth or fifth country globally to demonstrate this kind of futuristic defence technology.

This weapon is very important because drone warfare is becoming more common, especially in conflicts like the war in Ukraine. The use of drones in attacks and spying missions is increasing, and India’s new laser weapon will help the armed forces tackle such threats more effectively. It does not require traditional bullets or missiles; instead, it uses light to destroy its target at the speed of light. This makes it faster, cheaper, and more accurate than many old systems.

The Mk-II(A) DEW system is completely designed and developed in India. DRDO worked closely with other defence labs like LRDE, IRDE, DLRL, as well as Indian industries and top academic institutions. This is an excellent example of how Indian science, technology, and industry can come together to make something world-class and powerful for the nation’s defence.

Dr. Kamat said that this test is only the beginning of a new journey. DRDO is working on even more advanced technologies like high-energy microwave weapons and electromagnetic pulse systems. These are called ‘Star Wars’ technologies because they look like something from science fiction. But now, they are becoming real, and India is moving forward to make them a part of its defence system.

One of the best things about this laser weapon is that it is very cost-effective. Traditional weapons need expensive ammunition, but this laser system can be used again and again without spending a lot of money. It also reduces the risk of collateral damage since it targets only the drone or enemy equipment with precision. This makes it safer for both soldiers and civilians.

As threats from enemy drones and surveillance grow, India’s successful test of this laser weapon is a major step towards a stronger and safer nation. The development shows India’s scientific strength, its rising global position, and the powerful future of Indian defence technology. The Indian Armed Forces now have a new tool to protect the country more efficiently and with pride.
