In yet another chilling reminder of the worsening condition of Hindus in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal, two Hindu Sadhus were savagely attacked on Saturday (12th April) in Siliguri by a group of Muslim miscreants. This cowardly and unprovoked assault took place as the victims were peacefully performing sacred rituals for Charak Puja, a centuries-old Hindu tradition.
According to a report by Republic Bangla, the Sadhus were seated by a riverbank, engaged in puja rituals, when a group of Muslim men began their deliberate provocation. First, they hurled a bottle of alcohol, a symbolic insult to the ascetic life of the Sadhus. Moments later, a glass bottle was flung at them, indicating clear malice and intention to injure.
Despite this, the Sadhus attempted to defend themselves. One of the victims, Manik Sarkar, speaking to Republic Bangla, recounted, “Muslims attacked us. Five of us were sitting by the river bank and performing rituals. They first threw a bottle of alcohol and then a bottle at us. We taught them a lesson, following which they left the scene.”

But this wasn’t the end of the ordeal. Displaying their violent and barbaric intent, the perpetrators returned within 5-7 minutes, this time armed with weapons and accompanied by more men. The mob, now more than 8-10 strong, launched a merciless and calculated attack on the unarmed Sadhus. They inflicted serious injuries, forcing the victims to be admitted to a hospital in Siliguri. It was a pre-planned, targeted assault meant to intimidate and terrorise.
When asked if the attack was linked to the Hindu ritual being performed, Manik Sarkar said, “It is quite possible.” His statement highlights the deeply communal undertones of the attack — Hindus targeted simply for practicing their faith.
Reacting strongly to the incident, BJP MLA from Siliguri, Shankar Ghosh, condemned the brutal assault, stating, “This incident proves that it is a sin to be born as a Hindu in West Bengal. If you are a Hindu, then, you have to be prepared to be assaulted.”
He further added, “Mamata Banerjee’s government has created such an environment here that being born a Hindu here appears to be a sin.”
This latest assault comes amidst a larger pattern of Muslim aggression and rising Islamist intimidation in West Bengal, especially in districts like Murshidabad. The blatant lawlessness, selective silence, and the state’s inaction are now emboldening anti-Hindu elements to target peaceful practitioners of Sanatan Dharma without fear of consequences.
The attack on the Sadhus is not just an assault on individuals — it is an attack on Hindu tradition, belief, and dignity. And yet again, West Bengal’s secular machinery remains conveniently silent.
