In a big boost for India’s mission to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Kuwait has openly expressed its support, calling India a “main player on the world stage.” This strong backing from Kuwait, along with continued support from France and many others, shows that the demand for UNSC reform is now louder than ever. If you’re wondering why India deserves a seat at the top global table, this article will explain the facts that prove India’s importance to the world.
Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN and Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN), Tareq Albanai, recently spoke in favor of India’s membership. During a press briefing on the progress of the Security Council reform talks, he recalled his official visit to India with his co-chair from Austria, Axel Marschik. He said, “India is a main player on the world stage today” and stressed that if the UNSC is expanded, India will surely be a top contender.
He also explained that any decision about adding new permanent members will be made by the entire UN membership, which consists of 193 countries. However, he made it clear that India’s role in global matters makes it one of the most deserving nations to be part of the reformed council.
Adding to this support, the French Embassy in India made a powerful statement on April 1. As France took over the monthly presidency of the UNSC, it announced that one of its key priorities would be to push for reforms that give India a permanent seat. In a post on social media platform X, the French Embassy stated, “To reflect today’s world, France reiterates the need for a #UNSC reform that also gives India a permanent seat.”
India has long been asking for a permanent seat at the UNSC to represent the interests of developing countries. Over the years, India has proven that it can contribute positively to peace, stability, and development at the global level. Support from countries like France and Kuwait shows that India’s leadership is being recognized around the world.
One of the most important examples of India’s global leadership was seen in August 2021, when India held the presidency of the UNSC. Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian PM to chair a high-level open debate at the Security Council. The topic was maritime security, and the meeting led to the first-ever Presidential Statement focused on this issue. This statement emphasized the need for freedom of navigation, fighting piracy, and stopping maritime terrorism, issues that impact many countries.
India has also been a top contributor to UN peacekeeping missions. During its recent term on the Security Council, India introduced the “UNITE Aware” technology platform. This tool gives real-time situational awareness to peacekeepers, helping to keep them safe in conflict zones. India also introduced a resolution on holding those accountable who commit crimes against peacekeepers. The resolution was supported by all Council members and passed unanimously.
India’s balanced and mature foreign policy has also gained international respect. For example, during the Ukraine crisis, India chose to abstain from certain UN votes. Rather than taking sides, India called for dialogue and diplomacy. This showed India’s long-standing commitment to solving problems through peace and understanding, instead of war and confrontation.
India’s voice in the UNSC has always been responsible, inclusive, and focused on justice. It has regularly called for reforms that will allow developing countries to have a greater say in important global decisions. India believes that the Security Council must reflect today’s global realities, not just the power structure of the past.
The current UNSC has five permanent members, China, the US, the UK, France, and Russia, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. This structure was made after World War II, but the world has changed a lot since then. Today, countries like India, which have large populations, growing economies, and a strong commitment to global peace, must be given a permanent seat.
India’s growing influence in global affairs, its record of peacekeeping, its contributions to international diplomacy, and strong support from countries like France and Kuwait all point to one clear truth: India deserves a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
