On Saturday, April 19, India issued a strong statement condemning the abduction and brutal killing of a Hindu community leader in Bangladesh, urging the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government to uphold its responsibility in ensuring the safety of all minorities, including Hindus.
The incident in question occurred on Thursday, April 17, in Biral Upazila, located in the Dinajpur district of northern Bangladesh. The victim, 58-year-old Bhabesh Chandra Roy, was reportedly kidnapped from his residence and subsequently beaten to death. Roy was a well-known figure in the local Hindu community and served as the Vice-President of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, an organisation dedicated to managing Hindu religious festivals.
Reacting to the incident, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed India’s deep concern. “We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh,” Jaiswal said.
He further added, “This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government, even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity.”
The Indian government’s statement underscores growing concerns over the safety and rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh amid reports of increasing attacks and impunity for the assailants. The call for accountability has now been clearly directed at the Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus-led interim administration, with India urging concrete action to prevent further communal violence and ensure justice for victims.
