n a deeply disturbing incident that has sparked outrage, a 22-year-old Dalit college student named Shilpa tragically ended her life after facing relentless harassment, blackmail, and mental torture at the hands of a Muslim man, Ramzan Nadaf, who runs a furniture shop in Karnataka’s Haveri district.
The incident took place on Saturday, 19th April. Shilpa, a BCA student studying in Belagavi, was reportedly in a relationship with a man named Naveen, who had previously worked at Ramzan Nadaf’s shop.
According to reports, a personal dispute broke out between Ramzan and Naveen. Taking advantage of the situation, Ramzan unlawfully accessed Naveen’s phone, went through his private messages, and then began targeting Shilpa. What followed was a pattern of sustained harassment through calls, blackmail, and mental pressure.
Ramzan reportedly threatened to expose Shilpa’s personal relationship with Naveen, shaming her and mentally tormenting her. He didn’t stop there—he even falsely accused the young girl of theft, claiming she had stolen money from him, despite having no direct association with his shop.
Pushed to the brink by these repeated threats and harassment, Shilpa was left with no option and took the extreme step of ending her life.
A case has been registered at the Belagavi Market Police Station, but justice remains pending. Hindu activist Pramod Muthalik has come forward strongly, stating, “This is not just a suicide. It is a case of calculated mental torture. Ramzan Nadaf should be arrested and booked immediately under the strictest laws.”
This shocking incident yet again highlights how vulnerable women, especially from marginalized communities, continue to suffer at the hands of predatory individuals, and how immediate, uncompromising action is needed to prevent such tragedies.
