Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has triggered massive outrage after making a deeply offensive remark against the Brahmin community on social media. In a now-deleted Instagram comment, Kashyap shockingly stated: “I will urinate on Brahmins, any problem?” a statement that has been widely condemned as hateful, obscene, and insulting to Sanatan Dharma.
The comment, which quickly went viral, has drawn widespread anger from various quarters, especially among members of the Brahmin community. The controversy has now taken a legal turn.
An FIR has been lodged against Anurag Kashyap at Bhelupur police station in Varanasi. The complaint was filed by Govind Chaturvedi, a local resident, who accused the filmmaker of deliberately trying to hurt the sentiments of the Brahmin community through his public comment. Chaturvedi claimed the remark was not only divisive and inflammatory but also seemed like a calculated attempt to insult Sanatan Dharma.
In his written complaint, Chaturvedi pointed out that Kashyap’s remarks were posted on official social media handles, including Instagram, which only magnified the reach and impact of the offensive statement.
Based on the complaint, the Varanasi police have booked Anurag Kashyap under:
- Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (for deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting a religion or religious beliefs), and
- Section 67 of the Information Technology Act (for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).
The charges could result in significant legal consequences for the filmmaker if proven in court. Facing immense public backlash, Kashyap issued an apology on his X (formerly Twitter) account. In his statement, he admitted that he let anger get the better of him and accepted responsibility for crossing a line. He wrote, “I lost my composure while responding to someone in anger, and in doing so, I crossed a line. I ended up insulting the entire Brahmin community, a community that has had many individuals who have been a part of my life, who are still a part of it, and who continue to contribute meaningfully to it. Today, all of them are hurt by my words. My family is hurt. Many intellectuals whom I deeply respect have been hurt by the way I spoke in that moment of anger.”
Despite the apology, Kashyap’s words continue to face sharp criticism, with many calling for stronger action. Several social media users have also accused him of consistently targeting Hindu beliefs and culture under the garb of “freedom of expression.”
The incident has reignited debates around hate speech, accountability of public figures on social platforms, and the selective outrage often seen in such controversies. As the case progresses, all eyes are now on the Varanasi police and the legal proceedings that follow.
