At least 26 civilians were killed in a terror attack in Pahalgam, located in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday, according to sources. The attack occurred at Baisaran, a remote meadow accessible only on foot or by ponies, where a group of tourists had gone for a morning visit.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the exact number of casualties was still being verified, describing the incident as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.”
Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the phone and directed him to take “suitable measures.” Sources confirmed that Mr. Shah has departed for Srinagar and is expected to chair an urgent security review meeting with top officials and intelligence agencies.
The incident has triggered widespread shock and condemnation across the country, with security forces on high alert in the region.
