In a chilling escalation of violence in South Kashmir, a deadly terrorist attack in the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam left multiple people dead and at least 20 others injured on Tuesday, officials confirmed.
According to initial reports, the attack took place at Baisaran, a picturesque off-road meadow in Pahalgam, where a group of two to three terrorists opened fire on unarmed tourists. Authorities rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, with several victims reported to be in critical condition.
HM Amit Shah Holds Meeting with J&K Chief Minister and Top Delegate
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Srinagar in the evening, where he was received by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior officials. Shah held an emergency security meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, CM Abdullah, and other top officials to assess the situation and coordinate a response.
“This is an unprecedented attack,” said CM Omar Abdullah. “It is unlike anything we’ve seen in recent years against civilians. The final death toll is yet to be confirmed, and we urge people to wait for official updates.”
PM Modi Condemns Heinous Violence
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the assault in strong terms, calling it a “heinous act” and assuring the nation that those responsible “will be brought to justice.” He added that such “evil agendas will never succeed.”
Echoing the Prime Minister, Home Minister Shah stated, “The attackers won’t be spared.” He confirmed that one person had died and about 20 others, including tourists, had sustained injuries. Shah, who had spoken with the Prime Minister before his visit, is expected to continue high-level security consultations in the Valley.
This is the first such attack on tourists in 2025. A similar incident occurred in May last year, also in Pahalgam, when militants wounded two people. Security across tourist zones in the region has been intensified in the aftermath of Tuesday’s assault.
