In response to a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to curtail his state visit to Saudi Arabia and return to India ahead of schedule. Sources said PM Modi skipped the official dinner hosted by the Saudi government and will depart for India tonight, with his arrival expected early Wednesday morning. He was initially slated to return Wednesday night.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, is being described as the deadliest in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike. Twenty-six people, most of them civilians, were gunned down by terrorists at a meadow near the Pahalgam town. Among the victims were two foreign nationals and two local residents. At least 20 others sustained injuries.
Condemning the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the assault was “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.”
Security has been heightened across the region as investigations continue into the incident.
