Two terrorists were gunned down during a fierce exchange of fire with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the Indian Army said on Monday. The operation comes just a day after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives and left several injured.
The encounter broke out on Wednesday in the general area of Sarjeevan, near Uri Nala, where approximately two to three terrorists were attempting to infiltrate the Line of Control. The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed the development in a post on social media platform X.
“Heavy exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists. Two terrorists have been eliminated. Infiltration bid foiled by the security forces in the ongoing operation in Baramulla,” the post read.
A large cache of arms, ammunition, and other war-like stores was recovered from the slain terrorists. The operation was still underway at the time of the report.
This encounter follows the tragic attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow—popularly known as ‘mini Switzerland’—where terrorists opened fire on a tourist group on Tuesday. The attack left 26 dead and many others injured.
In response to the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his two-day state visit to Saudi Arabia. Originally scheduled to return on Wednesday night, PM Modi landed in Delhi on Wednesday morning and immediately met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to assess the situation.
The Prime Minister skipped the official dinner hosted in his honour by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and returned early to deal with the aftermath of the terror strike.
Condemning the attack, PM Modi posted on X: “I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice… they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable, and it will get even stronger.”
