India’s one of the most celebrated cricketers, Virat Kohli, on Monday announced retirement from Test Cricket, just days ahead of the upcoming England series. Marking the end of an era for not only Kohli fans but also the cricket fans, Kohli played a total of 123 test matches, scoring 9,230 runs that include 30 centuries and 31 fifties. The cricketer reached a 7,000-run milestone in just 81 matches, becoming the fastest Indian to do so.
Virat Kohli, best known for his unmatched fitness and relentless drive, now leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the game’s longest format. Kohli made his debut in Test Cricket in 2011 against the West Indies, gradually evolving to become the backbone for the team in Test matches. He holds the record for the most double centuries, 7, by a Test captain, surpassing legends like Brian Lara.
Known for his picture-perfect cover drive, Kohli was last seen in a test match during the 2024-2025 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, a series that tested the entire Indian Cricket team. The series proved to be tough for Kohli. Though he managed to smash a century during the opening test match in Perth, he could only put 190 runs for his team on the scorecard throughout the series.
Nonetheless, Kohli has proven to be one of the most successful captains in the game’s longest format, leading India from 2014 to 2022. Securing 40 wins in 68 matches, it was only under Kohli that India won its first-ever Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2018–19. During the 2016–17 home season, Kohli scored 1,059 runs, the most by any Indian in a single home season. Known for his passion and aggression, Kohli is the only Asian captain to have won the most Tests against countries like England, South Africa, and New Zealand.
