Hong Kong is gearing up for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve celebration, and it’s not holding back. The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is organizing the largest-ever New Year Countdown Celebrations with the theme “New Year, New Legend”. This event promises to be a visual extravaganza that will capture the attention of both locals and visitors worldwide.
The highlight of the night is the grand fireworks display, set to be the biggest in size and longest in duration. When the clock strikes midnight at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Victoria Harbour will transform into a canvas for the “New Year, New Legend” fireworks extravaganza. The spectacle will span an impressive 1,300 meters from Central to North Point and will last for a dazzling 12 minutes.
The genius behind the fireworks choreography is Liu Lin, Chief of Fireworks Project and Director of Fireworks Operation of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Inspired by the changing seasons, the performance will take the audience on a journey through winter, spring, summer, and autumn, symbolizing the circle of life. It’s a testament to the optimism and diligence of the people of Hong Kong, creating a legend through their boundless vitality and innovation.
To enhance the three-dimensional effect, five barges with 16 floats will launch fireworks from different angles and heights, filling the night sky and the harbor with a sensational feast. The accompanying sonata, arranged by renowned musician Chiu Tsang-hei, combines electronic, classical, and Chinese instrumental music. Internationally acclaimed violinist Yao Jue will add to the cultural fusion with a performance in the middle section.
The festivities kick off at 11 pm with rooftop pyrotechnics at iconic landmarks on Hong Kong Island, including Harbour Centre, Harcourt House, and Cheung Kong Center. These dazzling displays will occur every 15 minutes, providing an opportunity for people to make wishes for love, health, happiness, and abundance under the brilliant pyrotechnic stars.
New vantage points have been opened up for the public, including the West Kowloon Cultural District waterfront promenade, Wan Chai Harbour Chill waterfront promenade, and the East Coast Park Precinct in North Point. Sound systems at each vantage point will ensure that the audience can fully enjoy the synchronized firework music. The celebrations will also be broadcast live on various platforms, including the HKTB’s official website, social media, and ViuTV, reaching audiences around the world.
However, with great celebrations come necessary preparations. Traffic control measures and road closures will be in place in Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Wan Chai on New Year’s Eve. For sea traffic, sailings in central Victoria Harbour will be suspended, and services at Kowloon Public Pier will also be affected. It’s a night to remember, so be sure to plan accordingly and join the world in welcoming 2024 under the dazzling Hong Kong skyline!
