George Soros, a left wing activist and also a billionaire, has been on the receiving end of escalated criticism. Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan has accused Soros of pumping over $15 million dollars into non-governmental organisations that allegedly extend their support to Hamas. This accusation finds its basis from a report put forth by New York Post in November.
Hamas has been designated as a foreign terrorist organisation by the US and the European Union. On October 7, Hamas launched a full blown attack on Southern Israel which resulted in over 1,200 casualties. Additionally, Hamas reportedly had taken over 200 people as hostages.
As per the reports by the Fox News, Erdan labelled the alleged donation of Soros as a “shameful” act which is not at all surprising to Erdan.
Highlighting the reason he states, “For years, Soros has backed and transferred money to organizations supporting BDS that want to isolate Israel… They have never been about real peace or any solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
The Israeli Ambassador has further accused Soros of pouring in some fresh dollars from his funds to several other organisations for years supporting BDS that aim to isolate Israel. BDS stands for Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions and the basis of their existence lies in the destruction of Jewish States.
Due to this, this organisation has gained the status of an “antisemitic movement” by the German and Austrian Parliaments.
George and Alexander Soros’ Open Society Foundation (OSF) has found its name in the mix as well. The foundation is said to have donated $13.7 million to Tides Centre based in California.
Fox News claims that the Tides supports Illinois-based Adalah Justice Project that made a post on Instagram regarding a bulldozer demolishing Israel’s security fence on the day of Hamas’ bloodshed, captioning, “Israeli colonizers believed they could indefinitely trap two million people in an open-air prison… no cage goes unchallenged.”
OSF, in the past, has also funded Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), an NGO that is accused of fuelling the violence in the region after the October 7 attack by Hamas. Justifying its claim, the JVP has said the source of all this violence was a result of “Israeli apartheid and occupation and United States complicity in that oppression”.
The release of funds from Soros’ OSF to JVP since 2017 is close to $650,000. Adding further to the transfer of funds from OSF, Fox News reports that funds have also been received by the obscure Jewish NGOs whose mission is to exploit the Jewish identity and to convert the bashing of Israel into a politically and socially correct campaign.
The article that Soros wrote in 2007 for the US-based Financial Times has also surfaced. In this article, he goes to lengths in slamming the US and Israeli Governments for not recognising Hamas as the legitimate government of the Gaza Strip.
OSF, when put in front of the media, has denied funding to any organisation that works with an ulterior motive. OSF spokesperson has noted, “Any of our grantees have different perspectives and routinely disagree with each other, but our funding strategy, which has evolved over 20 years, is targeted towards working towards a secure future where rights and freedoms are respected. There is a strict US anti-terrorist legislation that determines which organizations or foundation like OSF can fund. We devote a lot of effort to ensuring full compliance.”
