Heavy rainfall starting on Monday night caused flooding in parts of Nellore, Prakasam, and Bapatla districts, disrupting daily life. The situation led to submerged suburbs, halted transport services, and power outages as trees and electric poles were uprooted.
A cyclone named Michaung, expected to intensify, poses a threat with warnings of heavy rain and strong winds in south coastal Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone’s impact resulted in the cancellation of flight services from Vizag, Vijayawada, Renigunta, and Rajahmundry. The Andhra Pradesh government declared a holiday for government and private schools on Tuesday.
The Severe Cyclonic Storm Michaung is located approximately 70 km north-northeast of Nellore, 170 km north of Chennai, 90 km south-southwest of Bapatla, and 150 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam. It is expected to make landfall near Bapatla on December 5, 2023, as a severe cyclonic storm with sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph.
Stella S, the Director of IMD-Amaravati, mentioned that heavy rainfall has been ongoing since Monday night in many parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh due to cyclone Michaung. The rainfall is expected to continue until Tuesday evening, contributing to the challenging conditions in the affected areas.
