During a heated debate on ‘Cash for Query’ in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla mentioned the importance of following traditions set by previous Speakers. He cited the practices of former Speakers Somnath Chatterjee and Pranab Mukherjee, emphasizing the tradition that the rules and customs they established are carried forward by subsequent Speakers.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee argued for a fair trial, stating that the affected person must be heard. He requested Speaker Om Birla to allow Mahua Moitra to speak, highlighting the necessity of a fair hearing in deciding the rights of an individual.
Kalyan Banerjee stressed the legal principle that no affidavit can be relied upon unless the person making the statement confirms its accuracy. He raised concerns about the Ethics Committee report on Mahua Moitra’s “cash for query” case, asserting her right to cross-examine those who brought charges against her.
According to the Ethics Committee report, which was tabled in the Lok Sabha, it recommended the expulsion of TMC MP Mahua Moitra from the Seventeenth Lok Sabha. The report cited “serious misdemeanours” and called for an “intense, legal, institutional inquiry” by the central government in a “time-bound manner.”
