The 2024 Golden Globe Awards nominations are out, and Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ are leading with nine and eight nods, respectively. The announcements were made by Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama. Interestingly, some anticipated projects like ‘Ferrari’, ‘Napoleon’, ‘Origin’ and ‘Swarm’ were snubbed, while surprises included nods for Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and Alma Poysti from ‘Fallen Leaves’.
A new category for best cinematic and box office achievement was introduced, recognizing films that hit a box office gross of $150 million, with $100 million from the U.S. domestic box office or equivalent digital streaming views. Nominees include ‘Barbie’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’, ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, and ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’.
In the Best Motion Picture categories, ‘Barbie’, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘Maestro’, ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Past Lives’, and ‘The Zone of Interest’ are nominated in the Drama category. ‘Air’, ‘American Fiction’, ‘Barbie’, ‘The Holdovers’, ‘May December’, and ‘Poor Things’ are competing in the Musical or Comedy category.
For Best Animated Film, contenders are ‘The Boy and the Heron’, ‘Elemental’ ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ ‘Suzume’ and ‘Wish.’ The Best Original Song category features songs from ‘She Came to Me’, ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, including works by Bruce Springsteen, Mark Ronson, Dua Lipa, and more.
Acting nominations include Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Greta Lee, Carey Mulligan, Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Emily Blunt, among others. Directors like Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan, and Martin Scorsese are recognized, along with screenplay nominations for their respective films.
On the TV front, ‘Succession’, ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘The Crown’, and ‘Only Murders in the Building’ are among the nominated series, with actors like Brian Cox, Rachel Brosnahan, and Bill Hader receiving nods. The Golden Globes 2024 ceremony will be streamed on Lionsgate Play on January 8th from 6:30 am onwards.
