Derek O’Brien, a member of the Trinamool Congress in the Rajya Sabha, got suspended from participating in the ongoing winter session of Parliament. This happened because he was accused of misbehavior and defying the instructions of the Chair during the session on Thursday.
O’Brien had asked for a discussion on a security breach incident where two individuals jumped into the Lok Sabha from the visitors’ gallery and released yellow smoke canisters. The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar, named O’Brien and asked him to leave the House. Despite the warning, O’Brien and some other opposition members continued to protest, demanding the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address the security breach.
Outside Parliament, another Trinamool MP, Dola Sen, called for action against a BJP MP, Pratap Simha, accusing him of helping one of the accused in the security breach get a visitor pass. Sen questioned the silence of the Ethics committee on this matter and emphasized the need for a proper investigation into the security of parliamentarians.
In response to the breach, the Lok Sabha secretariat suspended eight security personnel. The Prime Minister held a meeting with senior ministers to address the security situation. A significant change in security procedures was implemented, resembling airport checks. Only MPs are allowed to enter through specific gates, and everyone undergoes thorough checks. The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the breach, identify lapses, and recommend actions to improve parliamentary security.
Derek O’Brien’s suspension, demands for accountability, and increased security measures are responses to a recent security breach in Parliament during the ongoing winter session. The situation has prompted investigations and calls for proper action to ensure the safety of parliamentarians.
