In Karnataka’s Belagavi district, a police inspector named Vijay Kumar Sinnur got suspended after a shocking incident where a Dalit woman was brutally attacked. The incident took place on December 10 when the woman was dragged out of her home, stripped naked, tied to a pole, and beaten by the family of a girl with whom her son had eloped.
The local police department formed an inquiry team to investigate the matter. The inquiry concluded that one reason behind the incident was the negligence of Inspector Sinnur. As a result, he has been suspended for “dereliction of duty.”
The state is in an uproar over the incident, leading to protests announced by the BJP across Karnataka. At least 13 people have been arrested in connection with the case, and a search is ongoing for three more individuals.
Belagavi’s senior police officer, SN Siddaramappa, informed news agency ANI about Sinnur’s suspension due to his failure in carrying out his duties effectively. The Karnataka High Court has also taken notice of the situation, asking the state police for a report on the actions taken against the local police for their inability to prevent the incident. The court expects the government’s report by Monday, December 18.
The motive behind the brutal attack was the elopement of the Dalit woman’s son with the girl. Upon discovering the couple’s elopement, the girl’s family went to the boy’s house and assaulted the Dalit woman.
